A brief history of bearing development

The first condition for friction is that two objects are in contact. There are two types of contact, one is face-to-face contact and the other is point-to-point contact. The first method is like picking up a hand; there is a lot of frictional resistance and a lot of heat is generated. This method is called sliding friction. The second method is like a ball rolling on the ground with low frictional resistance and fast rolling speed. This method is called rolling friction.Secondly, the material of the contact surface and the weight of the moving object also have an effect on frictional resistance, which we will discuss later.

Getting back to the point, the preceding nonsense is leading up to today's topic, where we're going to talk about the history of bearings. There is only one word in academia for those who invented the first bearings, and I'm not commenting on it.The past is a story, just listen to it without worrying too much.

First, our ancestors gradually explored the laws of friction in their lives. For example, dragging prey or a large rock across the ground may be laborious, but if you arrange a log under the prey or rock, it will be easy to drag. This seemingly simple improvement was a major advance in the history of human development, showing that man had discovered the secret of friction and could save work by converting sliding friction into rolling friction.

During archaeological excavations at the site of Nineveh in the Mesopotamian plains, archaeologists discovered a mural in a tomb (Figure 1).The painting depicts a scene carrying a huge stone statue. As can be seen, the huge statue appears to have been placed on a "boat".There is a place in the front and back of the "boat" to hold the tow rope, which was used to move the statue. It is noteworthy that a number of logs are scattered under and around the "boat".It is conceivable that these logs were actually used as rails to reduce frictional resistance.
